What's FAZ?

A short description of the major German-language newspapers

Berliner Zeitung
One of Berlin's better newspapers along with the Tagesspiegel, circulation 180,000. Before the Wall came down, the Berliner Zeitung was one of the major newspapers in East Berlin.

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ)
Together with the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the leading quality newspaper in Germany. The FAZ is independent, and considered conservative. Circulation 390,000.

Frankfurter Rundschau (FR)
Frankfurt's other paper. Traditionally close to the Social Democratic Party and the unions. The paper has belonged to the SPD media holding since 2004. Circulation 180,000.

Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ)
The most important Swiss newspaper, which recently celebrated its 225th birthday. Circulation roughly 200,000.

Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ)
Based in Munich. The paper is liberal, and has the best culture pages in Germany together with the FAZ. Circulation 410,000.

Der Tagesspiegel
The other major Berlin paper, liberal, circulation 130,000. West Berlin's equivalent of the Berliner Zeitung.

Die tageszeitung (taz)
Alternative paper, established in 1979, a late offshoot of the German student movement. The German equivalent of "Libération", but somewhat smaller. Circulation around 70,000.

Die Welt
Belongs to the Springer publishing house. Germany's most conservative major newspaper. Circulation 200,000.

Die Zeit
Weekly paper. Liberal. One of its publishers is former chancellor Helmut Schmidt. Circulation 450,000.


The FAZ and the SZ put very few articles online for free. Other articles are accessible by paying a subscriber fee.

Die Zeit, the FR and the NZZ put almost all articles online, and provide free archives for some days.

All other papers put all articles online, and provide free archive services for a longer period.

Bojtar of the Hungarian Magyar Narancs, Gerbert van Loenen of the Dutch Trouw, Arne Ruth, former chief editor of Dagens Nyheter and Arno Widmann, of the Frankfurter Rundschau.
