All cultures translate from English into their own language. But the main English-speaking countries translate less and less from other languages. Is cultural globalisation a one-way street? Is the best defence against the hegemony of English... English? What is the role of the Internet? A discussion about world literature in the digital age.
Esther Allen, Barcelona/New York
Esther Allen was born in Auburn, California, in 1962. She is the author of a PEN report on Translation and Globalization commissioned by the Institut Ramon Llull of Catalunia. Allen's translations include The Selected Writings of Jose Marti, Lands of Memory by Felisberto Hernandez, Dark Back of Time by Javier Marias, The Tale of the Rose by Consuelo de Saint Exupery, Alma Guillermoprieto's Dancing with Cuba: A Memoir of the Revolution, and, most recently, The Nubian Prince by Juan Bonilla. Allen is the co-director of PEN World Voices The New York Festival for International Literature and is an assistant professor at Seton Hall University.

Thierry Chervel, Berlin
Born in 1957 in Paris. He studied musicology at the Technical University of Berlin. From 1987-1992 he was cultural editor of the "tageszeitung" in Berlin. From 1995-1999 he was cultural correspondent for the Süddeutsche Zeitung in Paris. In 2000 he founded the website perlentaucher.de, which, with 500.000 visitors per month, is the largest independent German-language cultural magazine on the Internet. In 2003 Perlentaucher won the Grimme Online Award. signandsight.com, the English language service of Perlentaucher went online in March 2005.

Anne-Bitt Gerecke, Munich
Born in 1969, is director of Litrix.de and is responsible for editing in the "fiction" department. She studied modern German literature, Scandinavian studies and Romance languages in Göttingen and Lund (Sweden). After earning a PhD with a dissertation on "Transculturalism as Literary Program", she worked from 2000 to 2003 as scientific assistant at the Institute for Modern German Literature and Media at the University of Kiel, and as a freelance lecturer.
Susan Harris, Chicago
Susan Harris is the former director and editor in chief of Northwestern University Press and the founding editor of its Hydra imprint in literature in translation. Currently she is an editor of the online magazine Words Without Borders.
Rüdiger Wischenbart, Vienna
Born in 1956 in Graz. Wischenbart studied German Literature and Romance languages at the University of Gray, earning his PhD in 1983. Since 1979, he has worked as a journalist for radio, print and online media for ORF, Der Tagesspiegel, Die Zeit, Der Standard, Publishers Weekly and Perlentaucher. He was a visiting scholar at New York University and Stanford University. From 1998 to 2001 he was Director of Communications for the Frankfurt Book Fair. He has written books and essays on culture and society in Central and Southern Europe, including "The Carpathians - The Dark Side of Europe".

Over 50 chief editors and editors from all over Central Eastern Europe and beyond discussed in Prague from 15-16 June how Europe's most pressing questions could be debated across the continent. The event, moderated by journalist Hans Maarten van den Brink, featured Endre B. Bojtar of the Hungarian Magyar Narancs, Gerbert van Loenen of the Dutch Trouw, Arne Ruth, former chief editor of Dagens Nyheter and Arno Widmann, of the Frankfurter Rundschau. We give the text of the evening's discussion.
