Exhibitions

"Head On". Works by Chinese star artist Cai Guo-Qiang. Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin, until October 15, 2006.

Two exhibitions have opened on the on the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, in Berlin and Magdeburg, until December 10, 2006.

"The Green Vault".The Saxon royal treasures have moved back to their original home in Dresden's Royal Palace. Permanent exhibition.

"Entry". A look into the future of humanity at Essen's Zeche Zollverein, in Essen, until December 3, 2006.

"The Eighth Square: Gender, Life, and Desire in the Arts since 1960", a journey to the furthest fringes of sexuality. Museum Ludwig, Cologne. Through November 12.

Architect Franz Gustav Forsmann (1795-1878) - A look at his public and private commissions. Jenisch-Haus, Hamburg. Through October 29.

Retrospective of works by Martin Kippenberger (1953-1997). K21 Kunstsammlung Düsseldorf. Through September 10.

"Mathilda is calling - Remembrance as Future," opening show of new Exhibition House Mathildenhöhe director Ralf Beil, in Darmstadt; a laboratory of remembrance, with art, culture, design and architecture. Through October 8.

Exhibition on the history of expulsion, "Erzwungene Wege" ("Forced Departures" - German site here), gives a taste of the future "Centre Against Expulsion." At the Kronprinzenpalais, Unter den Linden 3, Berlin, August 10 until October 29.

The German Historical Museum has opened its new permanent exhibit in Berlin.

"Eine Kathedrale in jedem Gesicht" - works of the Lithuanian photographer Antanas Sutkus, Museum of the City of Münster, until September 10, 2006

"Mythos Troja." At the Antikensammlung, Munich, until May 31, 2007.

"Rembrandt. Quest of a Genius." At the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, until November 5, 2006.

"Stephan Balkenhol". An exhibition of the motionless wooden sculptures with "a presence that's so riveting it's almost eerie" (Süddeutsche Zeitung). At the Kunsthalle Baden-Baden until September 17.

"Bildern vom Vierwaldstättersee". Kunstmuseum Luzern, until October 1.

"Leuchtende Bauten: Architektur der Nacht" (Luminous buildings: architecture of the night). At the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, until October 1, 2006.

"Wirklich … wahr. Gabriele Mucchi und die Malerei des Realismus" (Really... true. Gabriele Mucchi and realist painting). Gabriele Mucchi (1899 - 2002) may be seen as one of the foremost Italian painters of the 20th century. Until July 28 at the main building of Greifswald University in Greifswald; August 4 - October 29 at the Vineta Museum in Barth.

"The Conquest of the Street". Looking at representations of the city by the two most significant generations of artists prior to World War One. At the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, until September 3.

"Berlin-Tokyo/Tokyo-Berlin. The Art of Two Cities". At Berlin's Neue Nationalgalerie until October 3.

"World Architecture + Sport. - from antique stadiums to modern arenas". At the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich until September 3.

The Dusseldorf show of the works of Martin Kippenberger, who nine years after his death has suddenly become so fashionable. At the K21 gallery in Dusseldorf until September 10.

Dual show of the drawings, films and photographs (1991 - 2006) of Tacita Dean and a revision of the "Sign Painting Project" by Francis Alys. Until September 24, 2006. Schaulager, Basel.

"Egypt's Sunken Treasures". With over 2,000 years of finds from the Egyptian Mediterranean. Martin Gropius Bau. in Berlin. Until September 4, 2006.

"mama johnny", exhibition of the work of Jonathan Meese. With a total of around 150 paintings, sculptures, photographic works and installations this show is the first comprehensive display of Jonathan Meese’s work in Germany. At the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg until September 3, 2006.

"Mozart. The Enlightenment: An Experiment". The official exhibition in celebration of the Mozart year in the Albertina in Vienna, until September 20.

"Joe Colombo – Inventing the Future". Televisions that retract into the ceiling, pivoting walls with a built-in mini-bar – the works of Italian designer Joe Colombo could have emerged from the set of a contemporary James Bond film. Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, until September 10, 2006.


Festivals

"Ruhr Triennale". A festival of music, dance, theatre and more. Baroque man is at the centre of the second season under festival director Jürgen Flimm. At a variety of venues in Bochum, Essen, Duisburg and Gladbeck, until October 15, 2006.

ilm

"The Free Will". Germany, 2006. Drama by Matthias Glasner. The film about the ill-starred love of a convicted rapist, which earned Jürgen Vogel a Silver Bear for best actor at this year's Berlin Film Festival.

"Emmas Glück". Germany, 2006. Drama by Sven Taddicken, based on bestselling novel by Claudia Schreiber.

"Volver". Spain, 2006. Drama by Pedro Almodovar.

"Hui Buh - Das Schlossgespenst" (Hui Buh - The Palace Ghost). Computer animation film by Sebastian Niemann. Adventures of the legendary castle ghost, who has fans of all ages. Hui Buh is up against King Julius the 111th, who wants his castle back.

"Lemming". France 2005. Thriller by director Dominik Moll. Benedicte and Alain are a young couple living in southern France, whose wedded bliss is shattered after the boss' wife enters the scene.

"Vinzent". Germany 2004. Drama by director Ayassi. A mentally delicate character seeks his girlfriend in a strange apartment building, and ends up looking for himself.

"Opernfieber" (Opera fever). Germany / Switzerland 2004. Musical documentary by Katharina Rupp. A musical journey of discovery through the major opera houses of Italy.

"Wie Licht schmeckt" (How light tastes). Germany 2005. Discovery drama by Maurus vom Scheidt. It's Lukas' birthday, and he decides to leave home and have a look at the big city - for three days. At just 14 and alone for the first time, he develops a personal, intense way of experiencing...

"Grbavica". Austria / Bosnia and Herzegovina / Germany / Croatia, 2005. Drama by Jasmila Zbanic. Winner of the Golden Bear at this year's Berlinale film festival the film deals with a woman who was raped in a prisoner-of-war camp, and her daughter who was born of this crime. A film about contemporary Sarajevo.

"Far side of the moon". Canada 2003. Lyrical drama by Canadian star theatre director Robert Lepage, dealing with the conflict between two brothers trying to come to grips with their mother's death, and with Russian cosmonaut Leonov, who confronted with the immensity of space when he left the Soyouz spacecraft.


Opera

"Aeneas in Karthago", by composer Joseph Martin Kraus. The penultimate production of director Klaus Zehelein at the end of 15 years at Stuttgart's Staatsoper.


Theatre

"Klein Eyolf" (Little Eyolf), by Henrik Ibsen. At the Schauspielhaus in Stuttgart.

"Woyzeck". Freely adapted from Georg Büchner's original by American dramatist Neil LaBbute. At the Schauspielhaus in Zurich.
